With this in mind, we have launched an Employee Spotlight initiative. Our hope is that, as you learn more about each of the talented individuals at our marketing firm, you will gain further insight into why we are so great together.
Today, we are thrilled to introduce Josh Comen, Vice President & Creative Director. We have asked him a few questions to provide an insider’s look as to what makes Josh tick. Enjoy!
Where are you from?
I was born in Branford, CT and still live here with my wife Rachel, also from Branford, and our two children Stacia (10) and Silas (7.5). We live in the house my mom grew up, which is really great! My kids are the 4th generation of my family to live in our house. I have many childhood memories of running around in the yard and picking tomatoes in my grandfather’s garden which I have replanted each year since we bought the house from my aunt and uncle 11 years ago.
How did you choose this career path?
I always liked drawing and photography and my parents always supported this interest. I entered college as an Illustration major in 1994, computers were just getting introduced into the design world, eventually I changed my major to graphic design and after college I spent the first 11 years of my career doing print design. Chris Uzzo introduced me to Digital Marketing when we started working together almost 7.5 years ago. I have seen the industry change a lot over the past 18 years.
What do you like most about your job?
Variety of work and types of clients. I also like the balance of being to work virtually from anywhere. I love our ping pong competitions we have at the office too, it’s a great break from the daily grind!
What is your favorite part of being a member of the ZGM team?
Our team is fun and exciting, we all have unique backgrounds and help each other out when needed. I also like mentoring our younger employees and I am able to learn about all aspects of marketing with the variety of services we offer. I have seen this company grow since the beginning and it’s exciting to see that happen!
What is the strangest job you’ve ever had?
I never had a very strange job, although I would say the job I enjoyed a lot outside of my career was delivering flowers in the Seattle, Washington suburbs many years ago between 2001 and 2003. I learned the area very well and I got to look at the mountains all the time while I was driving around. It was great to experience another place from where I grew up and of course give people flowers!

Do you have any pets?
No pets but I really love animals, just not ready for any pets at this time, maybe in the future.
Name one thing on your bucket list.
Become a great guitar player and to ski when I’m 80 years old.
What would you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
I have a few I am proud of but ultimately it has to be raising our family. There is no other bigger challenge with such great rewards! Being a part of the growth of ZGM is rewarding too and I consider that a great accomplishment as well!
Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
Skiing, Hiking, Baseball, Music, Beach Days. I also love involving our kids in our hobbies and seeing them enjoy the same things my wife and I love to do.
What’s your favorite food? Least favorite?
Breakfast: Cereal, Lunch: Salad, Dinner: Pizza
Least favorite: Don’t have one, I’ll try anything, maybe.
Pick three words to describe yourself.
Kind. Outgoing. Funny.
Favorite musician?
Tough one, I listen to so many varieties of music, bands I listen too are Phish, Grateful Dead, Decemberists, Mumford & Sons, and Death Cab For Cutie to name a few. As for individual music artists I would say Bob Marley, Neil Young, Paul Simon, and Jose Gonzalez. Honestly, my music list would be so long if I kept going.
If you were a Crayola crayon, what color would you be?
I would say green, maybe blue.
You’re about to perform in a karaoke bar. What song do you pick?
I would probably hide in the corner and not do karaoke.
If you could live in a TV show, book, or movie, which one would you pick?
Last Alaskans TV show, they live out in the bush and have no contact with anyone, total freedom. Or Star Wars, of course as a Jedi.
If you could hang out with anyone for a day, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
I’d like to spend a day with the artist Andy Goldsworthy, he creates artwork out of natural objects in nature, he is truly amazing and so creative in a different way! For someone who has passed away, I would say my aunt Lisa who died young about 11 years ago, she was such a good soul and I am sad she never met my children, I know they would have really loved each other, but I also know she is here in spirit.
