Creating the Ideal Title Tag for Your Business
What’s in a title tag? Oh, just about everything. When it comes to SEO, the title tag is the most important element, with the only exception being your actual content. However, there is more to this secret weapon than rankability; readability is also crucial. Even if you can get yourself to show up in the top of the search results, if that reader doesn’t actually click on your title, it doesn’t really matter, does it?
Why Title Tags are Important
You know that first impressions are everything, and that is exactly what your title tag is. It is the first thing users see when they find you through a search, the copy that greets them at the top of your browser whenever your webpage is visited, and the headline that is displayed whenever your content is shared. So, clearly, it’s imperative to your success.
The Secret Title Tag Formula
Every type of business is a little bit different when it comes to the ideal order of their title tag, but there is a basic formula that applies to just about everyone.
- Keywords – It doesn’t matter if you are a national or local company, the beginning of your title tag should be your main keywords. In other words, what product or service do you offer? Here are some examples: wedding photographer, pediatric dentist, maternity clothes, etc. You know what your main keywords are; put them first.
- Location – Now, if you are in a targeted geographic area, you will want to mention it next. Ideally, you would use both the city and state just in case only one of them is searched for. Some companies have also found success in including the zip code. If you are a national company, this is where you can use your secondary keyword or phrase.
- Company Name – Finally, you should include your company name. This is listed last because, in most cases, your keywords will be searched for more frequently.
Consider the Length
It is always a good idea to keep in mind that Google will only show the first 50-60 characters (512 px) of your title. So if you want the entire thing to show up, keep it short. However, don’t obsess over it. While your most relevant information needs to be first, the way your title reads is also crucial.
Spruce it Up
Okay, so you have the three basic details you need to include, but if you just list them all in order, your title tag will be anything but inspiring. This is where you need to get creative and make your title jump off the page.
